Northern Power is reportedly planning to open two production facilities for its community-scale wind turbines.

According to Michigan Business Review, the company plans to begin contract manufacturing in Michigan. The report indicated that Michigan is Northern Power’s top choice for its first facility, with Texas as another possibility.

“It will be contracting manufacturing,” reportedly said Marty Gibbons, director of global supply chain for the Barre, Vt.-based company. “We’re better than 25 percent of the way there as far as talking to future partners and things like that.”

The facility could be up and running by the third quarter, Gibbons added.

The same report added that Northern Power already is working with Merrill Tool & Machine near Saginaw for about 20 percent of the content used to build its 121-foot turbines, and it has met with Grand Rapids-based Cascade Engineering, Gibbons said.

Northwind 100 has been serving remote communities and wind-diesel applications for three decades.

In September last year, Northern Power’s parent company, Wind Power Holdings, Inc, completed an additional round of financing with net proceeds of approximately $37 million to support the growth and development of Northern Power’s wind turbine business.
