FPL Group Inc. is contemplating development of two 50-megawatt thermo-solar electricity- generating plants in Spain.

As per the information available, FPL, which co-owns and operates seven solar plants in California's Mojave Desert, is teaming up with Grupo Hernando to invest around 800 million euros in building thermo solar energy plants in Extremadura in Spain, Expansion reported.

Significantly, it was added that the initiative had the backing of the regional government.

For its part, FPL's concerned unit spokesperson said that no investment decision has been made yet.

FPL is the largest generator of solar energy in the US through operations at the Solar Electric Generating System (SEGS) in California's Mojave Desert. In all, the group operates 310 megawatts of solar power, which is capable of meeting the energy needs of about 230,000 homes.

Among the other developments, group's Florida Power & Light Company recently received approval from the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) to begin construction of three solar energy centers. One of the projects, the Martin Next Generation Solar Energy Center, will provide up to 75 megawatts of solar thermal capacity in a "hybrid" design that will connect to an existing combined-cycle power plant. The facility is expected to be on-line at the end of 2009 and completed by 2010.
