SolarReserve appoints CFO

SolarReserve has appointed Michael Whalen as its chief financial officer.

Prior to joining SolarReserve, Whalen was head of the Americas project and export finance practice for HSBC based in New York.

To his credit, Whalen has more than 18 years of experience in project finance and the energy markets. As a banker for HSBC and Bank of America, Whalen led advisory or debt capital raising teams for more than US$15 billion worth of transactions in the global infrastructure, energy, petrochemicals and power sectors.

On the decision to go ahead with Whalen's appointment, Terry Murphy, president and chief executive officer, SolarReserve said Whalen's "wide-ranging track record of raising capital for projects in the global energy sector, particularly those with world-class scale and technology" made him the perfect fit.

The Los Angeles-based solar thermal company is currently in the process of commercialising its heat capture and storage technology providing utility-scale solar power on demand.

Recently, in an interview with CSPToday.com, Murphy said SolarReserve has made tremendous progress over the past six months starting with the formation of a very experienced power industry development team headed by COO Kevin Smith.  The team collectively has successfully developed, financed and constructed 7,000 MW of power projects valued at over $6 billion around the globe.

"This team, in a very short period of time, has built a very robust project opportunity pipeline, both here in the US and overseas, drawing upon their extensive development experience, market knowledge and strategic industry relationships," said Murphy, who is scheduled to speak during CSPToday's second CSP Summit US scheduled to take place in San Francisco on 30th September – 1st October this year.

"Our development plan includes projects that will be developed by SolarReserve alone, but a large part of our strategy is to lever our technology into joint development relationships with other development companies and utilities," he had said.
