Cabling supply woes could cross over to tidal sector

Cabling, on average, accounts for 5-7% of project costs but is the catalyst for an estimated 80% of installation problems, according to a news report by MRE.

Cabling has proven to be one of the most problematic components to manufacture, install and maintain during the development of offshore wind projects, according to the report.

The majority of commissioned European projects faced problems with either the delivery times, installation equipment and maintenance of both array and export cables, with the outlook not much brighter for upcoming projects.

Therefore the offshore wind and tidal energy sectors must compare notes to alleviate potential problems associated with cable supply over the next decade, said the report.
